The primary aim of the WiCTORY study was to investigate the relationship between cardiovascular risk factors in middle-aged population and future morbidity and mortality.

71318 men and women were invited to participate in a screening form cardiovascular risk factors. A total of 56940 individuals were deemed elegible for inclusion. Of these individuals, 34088 (59,9%) participated in the screening and reported a valid Swedish personal identification number.

During 1989-1999, a total of 36 Health Centres within the County Council of Västmanlad were invited to participate in the health examination. 34 Health Centres accepted the invitation. Participants were chosen from the register of community living in a randomized order.
