Swedish National Study of Aging and Care in Nordanstig
SNAC-N is a longitudinal study on the influence of life-time environmental and biological factors on medical, psychological, and social health in late adulthood.
The objective of this study is to increase the understanding of the aging process and to identify possible preventive strategies to improve the health and the care of older adults.

Participants were followed up every 2 years then every 4 years repeatedly. New cohorts of 60- and 81-year olds joined the study in 2006, and 2013. Participants in the Care System Study are followed up each time the decision for assistance is re-evaluated. This should be done at least once a year.

SNAC-N - Cohort 1
The SNAC-N population consists of a random sample ages 60, 66, 72, 78, 78, 81, 84, 87, 90, 93, 96, 99, 100+ year old individuals living both at home and in institutions, in the municipality of Nordanstig.

The sample was chosen in the national project SNAC and it was stratified for age cohort and year of assessment. Eleven age cohorts were chosen with different intervals, being six years in the younger cohorts (60-78 years old), and three years in the older cohorts (81+ years old).

SNAC-N - Care System Study
This population consists of all persons over the age of 65 who are receiving long-term elderly care and/or have permanent home care/rehabilitation in the Nordanstig municipality with their registration connected to assistance decisions.
