MONICA Survey in Gothenburg
The MONICA study is a WHO supported international multicenter study of risk factors for cardiovascular disease (Multinational MONItoring of trends and determinants in CArdiovascular disease), involving 38 populations in 21 different countries on four continents.
The objective is to measure the trends in cardiovascular mortality and coronary heart disease and stroke morbidity and to assess the extent to which these trends are related to changes in known risk factors, daily living habits, health care, or major socioeconomic features measured at the same time in defined communities in different countries.

A group of selected men and women received an invitation letter with a postal questionnaire enclosed. If the questionnaire was not returned within a couple of weeks, another form was sent. New questionnaires were filled out during waiting at the various examination centres and afterwards the participants were offered a consultation with a physician and a light meal.
