MONICA Catalonia Study
The objective of this study was to monitor temporal trends in coronary health disease (CHD) mortality, morbidity, acute coronary care, and risk factors in Spain, as part of the World Health Organization Monitoring Trends and Determinants in Cardiovascular Disease (WHO-MONICA Project).

MONICA Catalonia - Cohort 1
The study population was sampled between 1986 and 1988 from representative surveys from the central area of Catalonia and part of the metropolitan area of Barcelona. It is composed of 25 to 67 years old residents, men and women, of a geographical and administrative area near the city of Barcelona in Catalonia, in north-eastern Spain.

The first stage of sampling drew a random sample of individuals from 9 municipalities with a probability proportional to the population size. In the second stage, a random sample of individuals aged 25 to 64 years from the municipal population registries were used as the sampling frame (stratified by sex and ten-year age groups).

MONICA Catalonia - Cohort 2
