Mayo Clinic Study of Aging
The objectives of the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging were to determine in the population of Olmsted County:
- the prevalence of mild cognitive impairment;
- the incidence of mild cognitive impairment;
- the conversion rates from mild cognitive impairment to dementia or Alzheimer's disease;
- the risk factors for mild cognitive impairment;
- the risk factors for the progression from mild cognitive impairment to dementia or Alzheimer's disease;
- develop risk models to predict MCI or dementia (including Alzheimer's disease).

First recruitment started in October 2004; the replenishment of the cohort make up for attrition due to death, refusal, or inability to contact began in 2008 and 2009. Recruitment is ongoing to maintain a sample size of approximately 3,000. The follow-up interval was approximately 15 months.

Populations
Olmsted County residents aged 70 to 89 years on October 1st 2004, were randomly selected from an enumeration of the County population using an age and sex stratified sampling scheme. Participants return for follow-up evaluations every 12-15 months on average.

- Persons with a confirmed diagnosis of dementia were initially excluded, but since 2014 are now being recruited where possible
- Persons who are terminally ill and unable to provide information, or are in hospice are not included.

Over 4600 participants have been evaluated in person (face-to-face) evaluation since onset of the study.

Over 2500 participants have undergone MRI, 1200 or more have at least one follow-up scan .
Over 1,400 have undergone MRI and PET scanning; 400 or more have at least one follow-up scan.
Lumber puncture to obtain cerebrospinal fluid has been performed in over 812 participants; 137 have at least one follow-up CSF samples.
