GESTation and Environment
The initial objective of this study was to investigate the association between maternal blood PBDE concentrations measured in early pregnancy and serum thyroid hormone levels assessed at less than 20 weeks of pregnancy, at delivery, and in cord blood.
More specifically the study aimed to:
- examine the relationship between PBDE concentrations and thyroid hormones and their metabolites in maternal and cord blood;
- determine the dose-response relationship between Mn, Cd, Pb, PCB, PBDE and Hg concentrations at birth, and psychomotor scores of children taking into account potential confounding factors including postnatal exposures;
- determine whether prenatal exposure to PBDE flame retardants is associated with MRI abnormalities in brain function and connectivity and with ADHD behaviors and diagnosis;
- determine whether prenatal exposure to halogenated non-PBDE flame retardants is associated with MRI abnormalities in brain function and connectivity and with ADHD behaviors and diagnosis; and
- explore whether the levels of PBDEs and their substitutes, measured in both blood and stools during childhood, are associated with MRI brain measures, neurobehaviors and ADHD diagnosis, directly or via alterations of the gut microbiome.

Women were enrolled at less than 20 weeks of pregnancy, at their first prenatal care visit, with follow-up at delivery. Other women were recruited at delivery. All children were then followed at 2 years, 6-7 years and at 8-12 years.
